Matches are classed as a dangerous good because of the chemicals (potassium chlorate and sulfur) used to coat the tip. Dangerous goods are more expensive to ship because they are regulated more carefully and need to be shipped in controlled weights and environments for the safety of their handlers and receivers. We are authorised and accredited to ship goods classed as dangerous as per the rules and regulations of DG shipping and all of our team are trained to handle our matches accordingly.
Matches are classed as dangerous goods due to the compounds used to create the match tip. They need to be packed via a protocol in specific quantities and weights.
Safety matches differ from strike anywhere matches, requiring a specially prepared striker strip on the matchbox to ignite. The friction from striking converts a small amount of red phosphorus to white phosphorus, which then ignites the oxidizing agent, causing the match to burn. The safety match was invented to use less toxic, safer phosphorus compared to earlier, more dangerous matches.
What does our safety information mean…
Please keep matches away from children – and out of children’s reach because chances are something could go wrong!
Strike Gently Away from Body over Fire Proof Surface
Our matches strike easily and do not require hard striking. This will also ensure that your striker lasts longer. Striking over a fire proof surface means that if you were to accidentally drop your match then you would not start a fire.
Do Not Smoke
It’s not good for you! Also, it could cause a fire if your cigarette / cigar etc came in contact with the matchbox.
Store in a Dry Place away from Direct Heat
A damp environment could cause the paper and striker to dampen which would make them less effective. It might also compromise the match stick strength and chemical composition of the tip leaving it difficult to light. Storing away from heat is important to mitigate any risk of a fire starting.
